–Synopsis
An omnibus made up of three stories, which brings to the big screen the short stories from the collection Hands by Ranko Marinković, is a study of sorts of the Mediterranean region with an assortment of peculiar island characters. Loneliness and disappointment, accompanied by austere humour which sometimes turns into obvious cruelty, rise up from this island universe. Skillfully translating Marinković’s tendencies towards the grotesque and theatrics to the big screen, Antun Vrdoljak portrays the mentality and habits of Dalmatia permeated with melancholy, solitude, and yearning.
About the director
Antun Vrdoljak (Imotski, 1931), graduated in acting from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb and gained considerable popularity as a film actor, particularly with his role in the film H-8 (1958) directed by Nikola Tanhofer. After the Play (1965), a segment of the omnibus The Key, was his directorial debut, and the war trilogy When You Hear the Bells (1969), The Pine Tree in the Mountain (1971), and The Return (1979) makes up the most important part of his work. The second significant part of his work is made up of adaptations of literary classics: Snowstorm (1977), based on the play by Pero Budak, Cyclops (1982), based on the novel by Ranko Marinković, The Glembays (1988), based on the play and prose by Miroslav Krleža, and Carnival, Angel and Dust (1990). He directed one od the most popular Croatian TV series Beggars and Sons (1971, written by Ivan Raos), and several short documentary films.
